Florence Welch (Singer, Songwriter): I had a boyfriend say, “I keep dreaming that you’re building a house full of rooms that I cannot go into.” And when you make a record, that is literally what you start doing. You start taking your desires and your secret treasure, and you start making this house.
Greta Gerwig (Actress, Flimmaker): When we first met and talked, I remember you saying that and thinking it was so weird because I had a partner, and ex-partner, say to me, “You’re building a house inside of our house—you’re building a minihouse where you go and live, and I’m not invited.” And I was like, “Yeah, I’m also building a secret escape tunnel. You have no idea what’s happening underneath.” - Interview excerpt from W Magazine.
The process of writing these blog posts for each lunation often involves me looking at the aspects, doodling what comes to mind first - basic key words, etc. Then I consult my astrology books and do research - taking notes of resonation and reference. Then I let other guidance move me, telling me to look further into a mythos so I can string the tendrils together. And then somehow I link the essence of the lunation to lyrics, quotes, movies.
It feels very melodramatic at this point but what is life without drama, emotion, and arousal? So naturally since I’m in a deep Florence and the Machine phase (new album High as Hope is AH-MAZING) I remembered a quote from an interview she did with Greta Gerwig - the one above and it felt deeply intertwined somehow to the emotional building blocks Cancer alchemizes and the current opposition the Cancer Sun is making to the subtle but intense agent of transformation Pluto in Capricorn.
Cancer is what creates familiarity with the sensation of Home. Home can be considered “a place where one flourishes”. So it makes sense that in a way, we are all constantly seeking out ways to find or create spaces where we flourish, where we can grow, where we can relax, where we can feel safe.
Thus why this W Magazine excerpt came to mind for this Solar Eclipse: “You start taking your desires, your secret treasures, and you start making this house”, “You’re building a house inside of this house.”
I often dream of houses. It’s a reoccurring theme for me. I’ll dream of beautiful interesting houses, and find rooms behind rooms, and large spaces where you thought there were none. I would often awaken sad, the rooms upon rooms where exciting and intriguing; and I wanted to make them my own; my own secret spaces.
Cancer, to me, represents the temples, the everyday churches of our lives, the altar we tend to each day. These sacred spaces we feel at home, emotionally comforted, soothed, nourished. Like a womb full of growing life. This IS different from Virgo’s energy of sanctuary creation - which truly is more ritualistic and habitual - Virgo is more sovereign bodied and about creating wholeness.
Cancer is our dwelling; which has a dual meaning. A dwelling is a place we live in. Yet to dwell also means to linger upon a certain subject, often with negative connotation. Funny how that works isn’t it? Cancer can both be our safe space, yet a place in our emotional body we dwell upon and rehash - there’s a reason they call it cabin fever. There’s a reason why at some point “working from home” gets a bit cagey feeling after a while. So there’s a dichotomy of healthy safety and hiding out.
Did you know that the mythos involved with Cancer tells the tale of a crab named Karkinos sent by Hera to distract Hercules while he was fighting Hydra and the poor crab got fucking crushed by Hercules damn foot? I mean NO WONDER Cancerian’s get the reputation of wanting to stay the fuck home, it’s safer in there then it is out there.
We create homes within homes, we have the main house, then we have these bedrooms, then closets, then drawers, then little boxes or shelves and so on and so forth, with well placed windows and doors to look out from, to come and go as we deem needed.
We build these little safe spaces all around us.
They are boundaries. They are containers. They are structures.
They are crystalized forms of our emotions, our needs, our vulnerability. And they hold energy.
Think of ghosts, they dwell in old places, old homes, THEIR homes often - or places they were most familiar with. Why is that? Because home has an energetic blueprint the same as an architectural blueprint.
This is Cancer: A boundary for the familiar. A boundary for the feeling. A boundary for the safety. A boundary for the nourishment. A boundary for the womb.
You ever STEP on the toes of a Cancer? They SNAP. Hard. A boundary was crossed. And never again.
So what does that mean for us at the Solar Eclipse, which happens to be the first Eclipse in the series of ones on the Cancer and Capricorn axis which will last until 2020?
That the concepts of boundary will be prominent. The essence of ancestry and ghosts and their lingering. The essence of attachment and nostalgia. The exploration of private emotions. The concept of Trust. The dance between comfort and change.
I’ll reference Steven Forrest in his book “The Book of Pluto” which I referenced the Moon Pluto opposition of this Solar Eclipse. He explains that the Moon can essentially tell us what is making us happy or unhappy. From a Natal perspective our Birth moon can tell us where our happiness and unhappiness lies - which can be moody and changeable as the moon’s phases - and yet also there is always some flavor of consistency.
Each New or Full Moon provides to us an anchor to check in with the area of life that is being touched in our chart - are we happy there? Are we not?
In the case of this potent Eclipse we are shedding the last remnants of ancestral wounding, ghosts, crossed boundaries, excessive armor, and contaminated nutrients just to name a few. This will be adjusted based off of what house Cancer inhabits in your chart. We are also allowing a blank canvas to be created upon for the life areas of familial bonding, honoring ancestors, establishing boundaries that will foster transparent intimacy, allowing our inner Mother (or actual) to nourish us better by speaking the truth.
Example: For me it’s my 10th house - I’m letting go of ancestral expectations around purpose/career, and the boundaries I have let be crossed by their opinions, and I’m even letting go of patriarchal programming that would like to determine how my femininity shows up - or doesn’t - in the work force, and the major structures that govern our society.
I share that because most of us will be experiencing this theme yet again for Capricorn (associated with the 10th house) is also strong in the sky with that Pluto energy.
Our boundaries as feminine beings have been repeatedly disregarded by the patriarch - and there will be claws out. The next couple of years on this eclipse axis will require us coming out of our shells in order to create the type of boundaries in the world that are the useful, nourishing, inviting kind. Thus ever more the reason to work on getting our personal sense of Home more grounded, solid, and healing.
How often have you been called crazy by a masculine you were dating? Or heard them say such things about the feminine? They called us crazy because we reacted to a boundary being crossed, so even as we grow older, wiser, and more graceful (if you will) in how we express these boundaries - don’t ever concede these boundaries if they are a truth. No, the boundaries I laid down where never crazy - I just knew some line had been crossed.
I bet as you grow older each year you are recognizing this too. This series of eclipses helps us redefine, refine, and reaffirm our healthy boundaries so that ironically we can feel more free and safe in the world, with our families, in our relationships, and we can grow more trusting of ourselves. We are being given an opportunity to express these boundaries and see where
Here’s an example of handing your boundary issues in a less than mature manner: America is learning their Cancerian lesson around boundaries and how absolutely fucked and immature they are in dealing with it by repeating children at the border. How fucking Cancerian, really …the sign that is also representative of the Mother archetype who nourishes her children in the home. These dudes all have mommy issues and are playing it out on the world stage instead of seeking healing and therapy like the rest of us. But that is all I will get into about that.
Again, in The Book of Pluto Steven Forrest writes:
“The “nuclear family” itself is something of a walking catastrophe…Missing any of these kinds of nurturing, nourishing experiences can leave a scar that is reflected in hard Moon-Pluto contacts.”
“The key concept in Moon Pluto events, at least at first, is moodiness. Material is surfacing from the substrata of the psyche…Plutonian material, which is to say, material that we have had a reason to suppress of repress. It comes at us through the Moon, which means that we feel it before we think it - hence the moodiness associated with these events. We are registering in our Moon/Mood some unsettling information that will change our course through life.”
This is what this Solar Eclipse opposing Pluto in Capricorn can feel like. This moody mood, feely feels. New Moons are are often a darker time of the month for us - where we are in touch with our other senses, our intuition, more psychic, ready to bleed, to release and then grow, to turn within and reflect, to turn within and look forward.
It’s extra potent when you involve Pluto, God of the Underworld and all things dwelling in the taboos of the psyche; a home hidden away with the home we are more accustomed to. The basement, if you will, comes into play.
It will be near impossible to hide from the sometimes monstrous feelings we try to store down below with the Eclipse - so don’t even try. It probably won’t work out to well!
We may have boarded up our windows and doors because our consent was violated, but is it time now to strip back the authority a historic event has held over you to make space for YOUR POWER to fill up the room and become the architect of the home you inhabit?
I often see lower expressions of Cancerian energy as an energy barricaded in a home - yet peering out. You want to invite them in, but you’re afraid of the spaces they may go lurking. You want to go out, but you’re afraid of what you may bring home. There is a caution in revealing vulnerable spaces, a fear that someone will syphon from your womb with their cords. We all hold this energy somewhere.
I see higher expressions of Cancerian energy - especially with Pluto involved as the embodiment of emotional power. That masterfully stream their emotional power they hold into form, structure, shape, an image, a container, and they can discern who needs the nurturing of their womb and the ones who will respect it’s nourishment and when to cut it off. I see them execute loving boundaries while inviting souls into their home. I see safety that only comes from self assuredness of their strength and trust.
These are the qualities this epically powerfully New Moon energy will cast upon us and ask us to evolve and adjust and reclaim and reframe.
➖ GRAND EARTH TRINE ➖
The cosmos does have some other big movements happening this week. There is a Grand Earth Trine this week that lingers. Grand Trines are often regarded as lovely stabilizers in the Astros, these planetary bodies gracefully lean upon each other and allow for an easy transmission and communication of energy. They are often labeled “good luck” butttt the saying of “too much of a good thing” can be true too; sometimes there are things we don’t want to keep flowing so quickly or constantly because they are old news.
But the energy flows with much ease and unbothered, so it’s almost like we have an opportunity to trade one energy flow (or programming) and plug a new one in there if that’s what we want.
So we will have Saturn Rx in Capricorn, Juno (Goddess Asteroid of Marriage, Consorting) & Uranus conjunct in Taurus, and Venus & Ceres (Goddess Asteroid of Seasonal Cycles, the Great Mother) in Virgo.
It’s almost like a whirlpool when it gets going. Except this one is an Earth Grand Trine - which is more materialized and well, grounded. This also means that the creature comfort and desire to well, not change can be strongly in the air too.
Saturn in Capricorn likes to uphold systems already in place, for authority and power to stay “at the top”. Uranus craves change, but it’s rocky in Taurus - who needs a lot of convincing or the right temptation to move. Juno is very committed in Taurus creating even more “fixed” energy to contend with. And then Venus & Ceres in Virgo can be ..perfectionist, very very discerning, and even critical. So you can see HOW this may become a recipe for convincing yourself it’s better to stay home and just stick the usual comfort.
BUT PLUTO IS STILL LURKING IN THE BASEMENT BITCHES. And you certainly won’t be able to hide from it in your own home.
SO, why not entertain the program in the higher expressions of these archetypes and get those into overdrive instead to create change, that will be ironically stable at some point and leave you wondering…why didn’t I just do this sooner?
So what’s the remedy?
Saturn in Capricorn turns into taking ownership and responsibility for what the systems and structures have manifested in your life and redirecting your ambitions and goals towards something more suited to you or towards redistributing authority and power - and uphold that standard.
Uranus in Taurus awakens and upgrades your values, self worth, and the resources you had a feeling you had but weren’t really sure you did until you just …tried. Juno in Taurus commits to someone or something that brings equal investment opportunities and a shared love of something pleasurable. Collective Resources are encouraged.
Venus and Ceres in Virgo organize the home space, create well rounded, well being routines, better scheduling that feels more nourishing, and remains discerning but finds a way to love that which is imperfect.
This is the potential that circulates in the skies right now along with this very emotional, intense and transformative Eclipse. The support is there if we just filter that stream of emotional power into those containers and reprogram the damn thing.
➖ Other planetary aspects circulating the Eclipse ➖
🌙 VENUS -> VIRGO
Earlier in the week Venus did move into Virgo and stays there until Aug 7th. Venus in Virgo is a surgeon in love. She will slice and dice and not take any shit that is unworthy of her love when she allows her highest expression to walk through. This is deeply helpful if we’ve let something over test our boundaries or someone has fallen short in meeting our emotional and love needs. Venus is soft, receptive, loving and beautiful but she also knows she’s a Goddess and grows weary when she’s not valued. Venus gracing the land of Virgo will be highly discriminating and even unapologetic about what is not working in her love relationships for sure. The thing we do have to look out for is expecting perfection from every human being, even ourselves. Virgo can give us an over critical eye thinking we won’t be able to move on from something ever. But the gift here is that since we can see more of the imperfection, we are being called to love the whole damn thing more wholly than before. But hey, if you know some shit is not making you happy - whether is you or the “other” - speak on it with as much grace as possible.
Otherwise Venus is Virgo is a lovely time period for healing, for wellbeing, for making improvements to your habits. And for even cleaning up your self image. Again..I’m brought back to Florence Welch whose taken on yet another very very specific and niched aesthetic: this English Rose creation. She’s wearing more natural looking makeup (if she’s even wearing any) so you can see her angular features bare, her hair is more strawberry as opposed to bright red, and her clothing are these beautiful lacey yet tailored to her soft feminine pieces. Everything is meticulous with just the right amount of wild to emote something truly nature based - this is very Venus in Virgo.
🌙 JUPITER DIRECT IN SCORPIO
A couple of days ago Jupiter went direct in Scorpio after a 4 month slow roll. For a while here it’s been a phase of turning deeply inward an investigating our inner Scorpio: the taboo places we turn from, our shadow selves and psyches, our power dynamics, our ability to alchemize, our willingness to be intimate, our deepest sexual core, and even parts of our financial lives. Scorpio is like hiding our dirty little secrets and perversions and Jupiter, this shiner of a planet, has excessively shone the light into these dark bits and our inner and collective Hell.
Look at where you majorly slowed down in an area of your life since March, but may have involved something that initially showed up in December. For me, I took a step back from the ways in which I was earning money, and nothing in that area of life has really been the same since - and this retrograde was happening in my 2nd house, the realm of earning money, material resources, possessions, self worth, and value.
Collectively it just seems to have been one shit show of dark nights revealed over and over as Jupiter has been in Scorpio.
Jupiter will slowly gain momentum back and things can once again start moving outward into manifestation instead of only inward. It will be interesting to see how this effects what’s going on with the US government and even the entertainment industry with sexual abuse being prominent and women’s reproductive rights as well.
Hopefully we’ve been getting right with our inner power horses because we may really really need our chariots ready to go and transform the collective reality once more with the inner knowledge we’ve found.
🌙 PALLAS ATHENE -> LEO
Goddess Asteroid Pallas Athene joins the North Node and Mercury already in the creatively self expressed sign of Leo. She is labeled the Warrior Queen by Demetra George. She symbolizes Wisdom & Intelligence, Accomplishment, Learning, and even issues with Femininity. Many link her to Pattern Recognition.
When I felt into this transit I kept on getting a sense of Joy as our Genius and pattern recognition of what brings joy and pleasure - for Leo is very much about expressing joy and pride. We can access our wisdom and genius by being creative.
She can bring out our inner party planner and help us partake in things like art and dance therapy.
Some of the ways in which we may struggle with this transit is recognizing how often we turn away Joy and blissful Creativity, or even romance and love. Pallas’ mythos is that of choosing the masculine over her own feminine principle for sometimes when Pallas shows up in an area like this with a sign so connected to just being joyful, and accessing our inner child, it can feel uncomfortable.
But it can be beautiful when we channel it as I mentioned above - following joy, bliss and fun and recognizing the patterning of what we find joyful, blissful and fun can create breakthroughs in other areas of our lives: the strategy we take when creating our work, the people and relationships we want to have on our team of life, the ways in which we would like to make important decisions.
Take notes and recognize the patterns of your Joy for this one.
Okay babes, that’s what I got for you with this Cancer Solar Eclipse week. Next week is relatively quiet astro wise so we have a nice week to integrate between Eclipses - we have 2 more on the way this summer!
Hope Cancer treats you fiercely and tenderly <3
