January 1st, 2018; The Full Super Moon in Cancer: The Culling
“My fingers claw your skin
Try to tear my way in
You are the Moon that breaks the night
For which I have to Howl.”
- Howl, Florence and the Machine.
At the start of a brand New Year we will be welcoming it along with a Full Moon in Cancer, also known as the Wolf Moon.
Plainly put the Moon loves to be in the sign of Cancer; it’s home sign. My general sense of this Full Moon aligns with the feelings so close to Cancers heart: nostalgia, sensitivity, intuition, home and family, self care, nourishment, nurturing food, protection and emotional security. Cancer’s archetype include that of the Mother and therefore there is strong sense of femininity that comes to the forefront as well. Cancer is sensitive but also incredibly strong, resolute and patient. There can absolutely be a strong moodiness that overtakes us at a Full Moon in Cancer, we all know that the Moon represents energetic cycles that reach up and down, near and far. Waves of feelings are a natural experience around the start of a New Year, especially after one like 2017, and doubly so it has the potential to be with a strong Full Super Moon in this sign to usher it in.
Full Moons, and especially Super Moons (when the Moon is closest to Earth in it’s orbit) illuminate and can support us in celebrating our manifestations, and in letting go of excess entities that are overextending their stay. You can take the latter literally or figuratively.
Each month we are provided with opportunities to wash away, to cleanse, to purge, to cull.
If ever there were a Moon to embrace a good watery culling it would be this one.
There is a simplicity to this Full Moon in that Cancer craves the healing of comfort, of being at home within this world, within our sense of self.
It’s simple because it asks us that simple question over and over in various different ways but in plain language: What feels like…HOME?
No just in the socially acceptable way, but what truly makes you feel as if there is a foundation that travels with you wherever you go?
What makes you feel safe and self assured in each situation lives brings to you?
Where and who do you come back to in order to feel nourished? Sustained? Loved up? How?
To say that 2017 was a ball of confusion, chaos and just a general feeling of lack of safety for many people around the world is an understatement. More so than most years past our eyes opened up to all the ways in which people have felt unsafe (whether we agree with it or not). Many of the behaviors we take action upon boils down to a desire to create a sense of safety and home within the world, a sense of calm. If we feel anxious, we will do what it takes for us to get some serotonin flowing even if for a little bit, no matter the side effects, the morality, or how misguided it may end up being in the long term.
Everyone that is causing a ruckus is also trying to find home too. Just like everyone else.
As I said, I feel this Full Super Moon is a like a ritual cull.
Cull the social media that makes you feel like you have no control.
Cull listening to the news 24/7 that makes you feel depressed.
Cull the friends that have shown their true colors over the past year, and revoke their invitation in your space.
Cull the work that feels ultra heavy on your soul and makes the air feel suffocating instead of invigorating, open up that window.
Cull the habits that make you feel over-comfortable to the point of stagnation and inflexibility.
Cull the habit of ungrounding yourself by forcing an outcome.
Cull everything that makes you feel paralyzed and powerless.
Even as I type this I am finding myself culling in my own way. I culled the emotion, the worry, the thought that just sharply stabbed me in the nerves that said “You must finish this writing tonight, you must find something to say, you must have something to show.”
I culled that sharp anxiety that was forcing something to manifest. Every. Little. Bit. Matters.
And then I pivoted and made room for calmness, and for what actually feels nourishing.
Sometimes “getting it done” is the best sort of self care. Sometimes “letting it happen” is. In each moment, we get to choose what feels homely. Which can change, moment to moment, the same way that moon changes phase. Be reminded that the Moon is always the Moon, it merely morphs in accordance with what is needed, what is nurturing.
Be like the very Moon at this lunation. Honor the cycles of Culling. The cycles of Growing. The cycles of Movement. The cycles of Stillness. The cycles of Hibernation. The cycles of Fruition.
Celebrate how so much is ever-alchemizing and changing and yet how so much is also a founded constant and reliable.
2017 can go fuck off. We all know that. Yet we all know that there was so much to be learned that we now can embrace as vital information about what makes us feel cared for, what feels valuable, what feels like family and home, and what feels like emotional healing. And everything that certainly doesn’t. We have hopefully been through the ringer in such a way that we are more viscerally familiar with our sense of self, what makes us feel awful, what feels great, what our intuition sounds like, what our foundations are like.
Cancer reminds us of what is truly important to us. What our needs love. What healing actually needs to be done underneath all the bullshit that’s going on outside. About the comfort of family. About what self care is. About what being a good Mother, especially to ourselves means. Cancer reminds us of what is passed on from ancestor to ancestor down the wound and how it IS our responsibility to continuously come back within ourselves, our home base, to do the healing that necessary to dissolve trauma cycles and to solidify healing cycles.
The Full Moon requires that we show up to do the necessary release of the emotional and spiritual dams that have built up over the past year.
It asks that we acknowledge the healing we HAVE done because even though we may not feel yet like we have.. WE HAVE.
That we celebrate every bit of our human life that has been cracked open to show us something about how to heal, maybe differently that before but still familiar.
It asks that we make space for 2018 to fully land. To have a plot of land to build a foundation To make space for it. To provide for it the water it needs to grow. To throw a damn 2017 garage sale and sell off the old crusty patriarch specifically so the feminine can build, redecorate and nourish what has been barren.
To have the proverbial womb space to birth something new.
This Full Moon in oppose not only the Sun in industrious Capricorn, but also the countering Black Moon Lilith and the pleasure seeker and relationship centric Venus.
Full Moons naturally have a relating aspect to them, any time there is an opposition between planets, this is so…but it’s very strong when he Sun and Moon oppose. Each month, we reflect on the amazingness and the mindbogglingness of relating to others and to certain areas of life (because everything is a relationship, really). Now that Black Moon Lilith and Venus are in the mix in Capricorn too, there is a strong emphasis on relating and the many different expressions of the feminine too.
Black Moon Lilith in Capricorn is the Boss Ass Bitch.
Capricorn is considered the sign of the Patriarchy because of it’s association with Profession, Career, Ambition, Climbing the Ladder, Structures. Capricorn also reminds us of tried and true traditions and practices, as well as our elders and authority figures. It’s the “Adulting” energy, ruled by hard lesson giver and maturing Saturn (which is also newly into the sign of Capricorn).
Black Moon Lilith is the rebel, the feminine outcast, the original equality seeker.
This combination is like the Rose McGowan in the middle of a Harvey Weinstein world, untamable.
Black Moon Lilith in Capricorn has the potential to bring great power and focus to the feminist movement and the rising of the feminine. Anger is a catalyst and it shows us what is no longer tolerable. Lilith is so here for that. Lilith here knows the asset that is economic power. “Pay thy witches.” she demands.
This transit of Lilith through Cap continues until late summer. There is epic potential for a new wave of how business is being conducted to be established. Don’t let authoritative force of Capricorn be used to dampen that desire.
Venus in Capricorn brings in the softness of Earth again. Venus tempers Lilith’s rage. Venus reminds us to work hard towards making the world a more beautiful place. To build architecture that is both practical and pleasant. Venus is Capricorn is refined, she wears stylish shades of black, bringing grace and grit. She lovingly reminds us of how worthy we are, the value we have to bring. She is also creative, so she brings that flare to an otherwise seriousness. She wants something she can touch, feel and sense. Something solid to be shown to her as a result. This transit can help us manifest a committed attitude and manifest that which is tangible too. She finds showing up and doing the hard work to be sexy, coming through can mean cumming too.
These two, Lilith and Venus in Capricorn are dancing with each other and learning from one another. They find their preferred homeostasis and effective executions by maintaining their strongest qualities while also integrating the new things they each bring: Lilith’s unapologetic nature and Venus’s charm.
As all of this energy opposes The Full Moon in Cancer, the gifts of such interactions start to make themselves known. We see more clearly that the contrast of Cancer, the Mother, and Capricorn, the Patriarch are both needed. And both need integrating. We see the power of hard edges and boundaries, and the healing possibility of a nourishing touch.
There is a menagerie of ease and effort (among other things), and more importantly reminding us of the appropriate times to embody both.
Saturn’s hellbentness on beating time and accomplishing is met with the Moon’s soothing wise woman that reminds us time doesn’t really exist and life is just as long as it is short. Being and doing. Safety and Success. Family and Work. Intuition and Advice.
Additionally there is a trine to Neptune in Pisces from this Full Moon bringing a great possibility for sponge like absorbency of energy. We may feel susceptible to otherworldly streams of consciousness and subconsciousness and therefore very sensitive to those around us, as well as various substances. At worse we use vices to numb out, falling back into addictive patterning. At best we tap into intuitive flow and psychic awareness, experiencing synchronicities and signs guiding us. Our dreams may feel more intense and vivid than usual. Some of us may decide on a low key New Year’s celebration because of this. Some may see this as an opportunity to establish a grounded and calmer 2018 right from the start.
These are all being called out into the light of 2018 do that we may decide what it is that all this REALLY means for us in our current state.
To reflect on what we most need to leave behind and what we most need to call in.
To reflect on this sense of home.
To reflect on the foundation we are building for 2018, what do we need? What don’t we need?
What is important? Because that may truly be the only thing that ends up mattering in the end of all this complexity of humanness we were so chosen to experience.
There has been A LOT that has come up this year so this Mother Wound that is present in all of us can show us how sometimes, the catalyst for everything changing on a more real level is actually a comforting, simple touch from someone who cares.
May that someone be you, for yourself.

I only call you when you're in my dreams
Died too young
The culling then, it was obscene
I am depleted by love
I am depleted by love
I'll never tell the secrets of my family
A cult of anonymity
The kettle is wheeling, my love
Riding on the back of a hell they caused
One ear to the ground
One eye on the room
My tongue on your pulse
My finger in your wound
Sweet dead eyes, I long to hear you again
Sweet dead eyes, I long to see your face
Sweet dead eyes, I long for that illustrious hiss
Sweet dead eyes, I know you feel it
No turning back
"Only god knows what we're headed for"
The flowers bloom
The sun rises
