Integrate like a Witch: The New Moon in Virgo
On September 19/20th the New Moon in Virgo will waltz into our lives ready to usher us into wholeness. We’ve gone through almost a full month of Virgo Solar energy as the Sun moved through this sign. You may have noticed your body far more than usual, maybe feeling autoimmune conditions flare up, perhaps digestive issues, which are both in the realm of Virgo rulership. Or maybe you’ve experienced some of the results of working on your wellbeing and are feeling better. Perhaps you’re somewhere in the middle, just more aware that you have a whole body that is your own to look after.
Bodily sensations or not, Virgo is a sign about integration. It’s the first of the transformational signs (followed by Libra and Scorpio, coming up next). Virgo takes what the personal signs have awakened in us as individuals (Aries through Leo) and synthesizes them together. We become a Whole, Sovereign being. Likewise, we become aware of how we may be of service in the world, for Virgo is also about using skills to make contributions. Over the past month, throughout Virgo season, we have asked ourselves these human yet also soulful questions, (hopefully) we’ve discovered new mediums to carry out intentions we have or at the very least we have an increased desire to utilize what we know and are focused on fulfilling what we sense we have been tasked with.
This New Moon, while happening towards the end of Virgo season, and therefore at the last few degrees of the sign, enhances the concept of synthesis. It’s almost as if the Universe positioned it all in such a way that we experience one of Virgo’s main intentions: to make improvements and perfect things.
Virgo gets the reputation of being the sign of perfectionism and the nagger about everything that could be better; you, others, the world, work, etc. Yes, this is a pretty important quality to Virgo. But, It’s not there to drive us crazy. Although when it gets out of hand, it can.
But the purer essence of what this does and can do for us when harnessed with care is that it gives us standards, it helps us develop our taste, it helps us refine and define what is most important, valuable, and well..yes..perfect for us. It helps us focus and be more concise in our lives. It helps us ritualize that which we feel compelled to devote ourselves to, which can help us develop mastery.
This New Moon in Virgo can be a time where we go within, take some time to be with ourselves and gain the much needed clarity about what we need to do to call our power back to us. Often times, it doesn’t look like adding more things to the schedule, but rather simplifying our lives and making things more streamlined, making operations more smooth often requires just a few key ingredients. Not a billion. This process of clarity and simplicity is not about deprivation, it’s about loosening our grip on complication.
I once remember reading a quote somewhere that stated: “We complicate things because we don’t know what we want.” And most recently another quote by Dejan Stonjanovic; “The most complicated skill is to be simple.” Both expressions ring so pure and so true.
The New Moon in Virgo helps us clean up the excess. What is no longer necessary. What is no longer potent.
It helps us polish up.
Perfectionism can become an obsession, and an excuse. Some of us get so caught up in making everything “just so” that we forget to enjoy the moment, the process, and we find a fault in everything and it drags our energy out and drains us. The constant seeking to perfect can become dangerous in this case.
We see it when it comes to being a workaholic and not knowing when to take a break to take care of other things. We see it when we become self sacrificing and try to be of service at all times. We see it when we become obsessed with eating cleanly and berate ourselves if we don’t because we place our self worth upon this perfect rituals.
These are distortions of the pure intent of Virgo.
Virgo is here to help us improve and it’s also here to humble us. To let us know that perfection only exists at the moment we proclaim that it does. And often the most perfect moments end up being the imperfect ones that bring us joy, satisfaction, and improves us in other ways we never imagined.
We see it when we make plans that go astray that lead us to a “better” place or the person we most needed to meet. We see it when learn to love someone or ourselves unconditionally because we know that people are not..perfect and make mistakes. We see it when we hit publish on the thing we’ve been writing or creating and are happy that we were brave enough to do so. We see it when we then stand in integrity with it when others try to point out it’s every flaw. We see it when we become ill but then have realize exactly what we need to change in order to get better, and prevent other mishaps.
The pure intent of Virgo is to be like the Virgin. No, I don’t mean sexually chaste. I mean a “woman who is one unto herself”. As in she belongs to herself and no one else. She is whole and complete on her own. One whom discerns and decides what and whom she is most dedicated to and focused upon. Virgin is the Union with the self. ALL of it. It takes some work to be in union with all of our selves.
As I mentioned, we have many contrasting and contradictory parts and much to consider, much to improve upon ourselves, but that does not mean we are not allowed to integrate all that we are, as the complex Witches that we truly are. That does not mean that we don’t deserve to wholly heal, another one of Virgos specialities is the ability to heal through its adopted medium of work.
In the Magical Soul Bitches Guide to the New Moon in Virgo I write:
“Raven Kaldera in his book Moon Phase Astrology calls this lunation the “Maiden’s Moon”. Under this phase, he says, we are called upon to embrace how complete we are on our own, how to be ourselves “without fuss”, and how to be and work in solitude.
I see this as New Moon for accepting our desire to do our own thing. How it’s okay to want to be alone and establish boundaries when we are around others. Raven expresses that there can be a tendency for some of us hermit types to experience or become aware of the downsides of being more reserved, how it may create too much distance and a lack of intimacy that makes relationships more difficult or at the very least, take longer to form a strong bond and understanding.
Above all, I really do see this as a time for becoming more clear about OUR process, and where we are currently at with...pretty much everything since March of this year. Virgo as I said, wants perfection, it wants to refine. Which can sound harsh and exhausting, but it can also bring forward a tremendous lesson in acceptance. In loving ourselves, others, our work, our process, and our bodies unconditionally. Being so aware of everything that can go wrong or is wrong, is just an opportunity to make plans just a much as it is to embrace that you can’t control everything that happens, or other people.”

An important aspect in relation this New Moon is the energy of Chiron, currently Retrograde in Pisces. Chiron will be opposing this New Moon, Pisces being the opposite sign of Virgo. Pisces is the sign of spiritual awareness, of compassion, of escapism and imagination, of limitlessness, of the intangible and of the collective unconscious.
Pisces is also about our hidden gifts, and the utilization of our intuition and emotions to guide us. It is also about service, the same way that Virgo is. Virgo likes to get to work, make the pieces fit together, and be practical and grounded about this awareness of spirituality OR sense of PURPOSE, which is often how it manifests for us now. This is why Virgo was often originally connected to those that are dedicated to religious systems and associated with Priestesshood.
This opposition to Chiron is powerful because Chiron is all about the deepest wounds we own. In this case it’s representative of the soul wound we feel may never heal. Not to sound like a debby downer but there are some parts of ourselves the best “perfect” we can attain is to embrace acceptance. This is part of the lesson of Chiron, know as the Wounded Healer. That doesn’t mean we become jaded or don’t work to make improvements, it’s just the acceptance that at some point, we must surrender and let go fighting with ourselves and let things flow and evolve as they are meant to. Because sometimes that is where the healing occurs.
We show up and we do the work to the best we can utilize, we create rituals that are in support of healing but we don’t have a strong hold of controlling every single bit and piece of everything about this. Because that WILL drive us crazy.
We do our best to make that with is subconscious, conscious in our lives. And perhaps in the lives of others, so we share what we have learned in the very Virgo way that we chose to focus upon.
In the Guide I also write about this:
“Pisces is often about having that sheer faith, believing is seeing. They both need each other. With the Sun’s appearance here in Virgo with all the other aspects to Pisces energy, we are being asked to explore the Virgo/Pisces contrast and connection again from a different angle. The angle we are looking at right now brings awareness around Earth and Water. Earth is dense, industrious, it’s a foundation, it’s like “Hey! I’ve got resources for you to use! (Just be kind)” Water is fluid, it can be light or heavy depending, it’s flexible, it’s nourishing, it’s the essence that helps thing grow or it can dissolve things. It’s like Water is the Soul. Earth is the Tool. Neither can exist without the other in this human life of ours.”
We have so much energy in Virgo right now supporting us to do all of the above from many different mediums: The Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars and Vesta. These are all very personal archetypal energies as I mentioned earlier. And they are all receiving the integrative wholeness that Virgo would like to provide. This is probably why many of us feel tired and dense right now too, but also having a strong desire to do something about it and put the pieces together. Vesta is the Goddess Asteroid that actually rules over the sign of Virgo so we have her focus, dedication and healing in our corner bestowing her divine feminine wisdom.
Reclaiming our power, our Witch, our wholeness.
We have much mystical energy bouncing off all of this too, making the heart and the soul louder. Pay attention to your dreams, to your synchronicities, to what feels difficult, to what feels easy, to what feel disconnected and to what feels unified.
And lastly...Take care of your body like it is a temple, because it is exactly that.
Happy New Moon!
